Too Much Power Behind Mudbugs’ Play

Odessa, TX (October 21, 2016) – The Odessa Jackalopes traveled to Shreveport to take on the Mudbugs for the second time in three weeks, hoping to continue their hot streak after the sweep in Corpus Christi over the IceRays last weekend.

After scoring the first goal in the last six games, the Jackalopes gave up the first goal in this matchup to Trent Kulczyk, his first on the year, and the 1-0 lead for the Mudbugs. A penalty by Nick Wilson led to a penalty shot for Jack Jaunich who made a great move, but Jackalopes goaltender Jonny Hogue saw it coming and made a kick save to keep the game within one.

Into the second period, the Jackalopes came out with more fire. A game-tying goal just over three minutes into the period tied the game at 1-1. Zach Zech scored the open-net goal, assisted by Cooper Zech and Zach Heintz. With that goal, Zach Zech now moves into a tie for 6th place on the Jackalopes all-time scoring sheet. The tie game wouldn’t stay long though as the Mudbugs’ Croix Evingson scored on the powerplay. The goal by Evingson was the first of three unanswered power play goals by Shreveport.

The Jackalopes entered the third period trailing 2-1 before the Mudbugs added two more. Power play goals by Erik Zohovs and Kieran Durgan put Shreveport up 4-1 with 16 and a half minutes remaining in the game, plenty of time to mount a comeback. Cooper Zech scored two minutes later on a power play of his own, assisted by Chase Thudium and Zach Zech. Hoping the goal would keep momentum flowing for the Jackalopes was too much to ask for, as it was silent from there on out, ending in a 4-2 loss for the Jacks.

Jonny Hogue saved 35 of 39 shots he faced in the game, taking the loss and dropping his record to 5-3 on the season. The Jackalopes are now 7-5 on the season through their first 12 games. Mudbugs goaltender Dylan Lubbesmeyer beat the Jackalopes for the second consecutive game, increasing his record to 2-2 on the season, and the Mudbugs record to 6-3-1.

The Jackalopes hope to rebound Saturday night as they face the Mudbugs for one last road game before heading home for the home opener in Odessa next Thursday, October 27th.
