Odessa, TX – A three-goal third period was the difference maker as the Odessa Jackalopes (29-21-3-2) beat the Topeka RoadRunners (17-33-2-2) by a final score of 5-3 on Friday night. The game would be two of three for Shriners Weekend.
Odessa broke through early in the first period for the second straight night. Jared Christy fired a shot from the right circle that was blocked, but the rebound fell onto the tape of Matt Brown as he blasted one past Topeka’s Derek Fournier for the lead only 1:15 into the contest.
Blake Bride doubled the lead five minutes later on the Jackalopes first power play of the night. Ricky Carballo broke down the right wing and fed a puck in front for Bride who flipped one to the far post and in past Fournier.
Topeka would get two back to tie the game at the end of the first 20 minutes. Jared Christy took a hit at the end of the period, and would not return with a lower body injury.
A scoreless second period almost saw Odessa break through again as Matt Brown thought he had his second of the contest, but it was just after the horn sounded, leaving us tied with 20 left to play.
For the second straight night, Blake Bride tallied his second of the contest, and fourth on the weekend to regain the lead for Odessa. Bride was inches away from the hat trick as he hit the inside post on a power play. Luckily, he had teammates to cleanup the mess as Viktor Johansson found Carballo for the tap-in to double up the RoadRunners.
Topeka snuck a goal in with two and a half minutes left on a tough-angle shot, but Zach Heintz sealed the deal with his 11th tally of the game as the Jackalopes hopped past the RoadRunners.
Alex Camarre stopped 44 shots on the night to backstop the Jackalopes to victory while Fournier could only prevent 39. The Jackalopes power play went 2-6 while the penalty kill was perfect on six attempts as well.
The Jacks finish off Shriners Weekend against the RoadRunners tomorrow night at the Jack Shack. Make sure to come out and stick around after for the jersey auction.
