ODESSA, TX – The Odessa Jackalopes survived a two-goal Topeka third period to secure a 4-2 victory Saturday night at Ector County Coliseum. Odessa’s sweep over the RoadRunners moved the Jacks to 5-3-0 on the year and sole possession of fourth place in the South Division.
Second-year forward Hampus Sjodahl turned in his most dominating performance of the year tallying one goal, one assist, and +1 rating.
In the first, Daniel Kiraly (2) collected the puck in the neutral zone, blazed around the RoadRunners defense and snuck a perfect shot over the shoulder of the goaltender Vladimir Cibulka to take a early 1-0. Each team had two power play’s apiece in the first, but neither could collect on the man advantage.
Odessa exploded to a 3-0 lead in the second when Sjodahl used a quick shoulder fake on a 2-on-1 to get Cibulka leaning to his left before sneaking a backhand to the short side at 6:32. Odessa finished off the two-goal period at 9:33 when Eric Carreras redirected a shot off a Topeka’s Andrew Hart to give the Jacks a 3-0 lead.
In the third, the RoadRunners cut the lead down to just one after a power play goal by Ryan O’Connor at 4:11 and an even strength tally by Dominic Lutz at 6:00. Odessa was able to weather Topeka’s comeback and seal the weekend sweep when Oliver Celec scored on an open net 2-on-1 at 19:06.
The Jacks go on the road next week for two games against the first-place Wichita Falls Wildcats, who beat Odessa 5-3 in their lone matchup back on October 3.
