Odessa victorious in game one of season-long road trip.

FRISCO, TX– In the first game of a season-long seven game road swing, the Odessa Jackalopes rallied from down 1-0 to defeat the Texas Tornado by a final score of 2-1 Friday at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, TX. With the win, Odessa improved to 12-16-4 overall in 2011-12 and 3-2-1 against Texas this season. With 28 points, the Jacks now sit two points shy of the Corpus Christi IceRays, alone in fifth place in the NAHL’s South Division standings.

In the third of three consecutive games against Texas, the Jacks were forced to battle back from an early 1-0 deficit, courtesy of Tornado winger Ondrej Kopta’s fourth goal of the season, an unassisted marker at 6:48 of the first period. An Odessa response wasn’t far behind however, as Josh Obregon tied the game just over one minute later, hammering home a Lawrence Cornellier pass from Mikko Virtanen at 7:56 of the frame, his third goal in his past two games and his eighth goal of the season.

After a scoreless second period, the Jackalopes took the lead for good when Tyller Robert picked off a Texas pass and buried a breakaway wrister at 6:10 of the third, his second goal, third point and second game-winning goal of 2011-12. Odessa netminder Connor Hellebuyck withstood a furious Texas rally down the stretch, stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faced in his 18th consecutive start and 28th overall appearance.

Next up for the Jacks, it’s a stretch of three games in three nights beginning Thursday, January 12 in Corpus Christi.
