Entering the weekend, the Odessa Jackalopes had a chance to move closer to playoff contention with an important weekend against the Shreveport Mudbugs on the road.
The first period went the way of Shreveport as the Mudbugs netted one goal to take the lead. Brendon Gysbers fired one through traffic that beat Hogue on the far post for the 1-0 Shreveport lead.
Mudbugs outshot the Jacks 11-7 in the first, but a penalty by Erik Zohovs, chopping Wood at the knees after the horn started the Jacks off on a power play for the 2nd period.
The power play went according to plan, as the Jacks held the puck in offensive ice until Zach Zech found Cooper Zech, and Cooper saucered one across the ice to Ludwig Stenlund, who fired one home for the tie.
Shreveport would add one more on a good bounce and an open net from Cameron Cook before Zach Heintz found Zach Zech, who pushed one through the five-hole for the 2-2 tie on a breakaway.
The second period ended with Connor Wood in the penalty box, but the Jackalopes perfect penalty kill went 6-for-6 tonight against the Mudbugs number one ranked power play.
A scoreless third would take us into overtime for the second straight game. It turned out better this time as Zac Herrmann blocked a shot and sent one down the ice to Stenlund for the long stretch pass. It missed Stenlund’s stick, but bounced off the boards in a position for Stenlund to take a shot.
Stenlund’s slap shot was saved, but sat in the crease untouched until Chase Thudium pushed it past an un-wavering Lubbesmeyer for the game winner for his team-leading 20th goal of the season.
Jacks gain a half game on Corpus Christi and now trail by 6 games with 15 remaining in the season.
Odessa gets back at it tomorrow night at 7:11pm against the Mudbugs to close out the weekend, looking for two more points.
1st Star: Chase Thudium (GWG)
2nd Star: Jonny Hogue (30/32, W)
