Odessa, TX – With a heavy heart, the Odessa Jackalopes announce the passing of long-time Jackalopes supporter, Rick Coe. Coe passed early Saturday morning at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas surrounded by his wife, Sandy, and other loved ones.
“It was a sad day for our Jacks family to lose someone so close to our staff and players,” says team president Kevin Leisgang. “We look to continue Rick’s legacy by continuing Shriner’s weekend for years to come.”
Coe was vital in the inception of the Jackalopes annual Shriners Weekend, where proceeds of the jersey auction benefit the children at Shriners Hospitals. This season will mark the 10th Shriners Weekend with the Jackalopes. The organizations have raised over $500,000 together over the previous nine years. This year’s Shriner’s Weekend will take place on March 22nd-24th against the Topeka RoadRunners.
Besides organizing the annual Shriners weekend, Rick has been also the organizer of the Jackalopes’ annual golf tournament that has been renamed the Rick Coe Classic. This year the golf tournament will be held on Monday, March 26 at Andrews Country Club.
The Jacks debuted warm-up jerseys to honor Rick Coe on January 26th, and will auction them off following the final game of the season on April 7th.
For donations to the Shriner’s Hospital in Rick’s name please contact Kevin Leisgang at Kleisgang@jackalopes.org or 432-552-7825.
