JR. JACKS GEAR UP FOR STATE FINALS
Bantam B, Midget Minor teams have a championship in their sights.
ODESSA, TX– Perennial contenders in the North Texas Hockey League, a pair of Odessa Jr. Jacks teams are closing in on history as both the ‘Bantam B’ and ‘Midget Minor’ squads are headed to the 2011-12 Texas state championships. The bantam squad, coached by Jackalopes all-time penalty-minute leader Donnie Margettie, will take on the Dallas Oilers in Irving, Texas this weekend and fellow former Jacks great Dan Lavergne’s midget squad squares off with the Houston Wild in McKinney, Texas.
The Jr. Jacks ‘Bantams B’ team advanced to the state finals thanks to a dominant 3-1 record in the semi-final round last weekend in Dallas, finishing as the second-best team in the tournament after receiving a bye in the quarterfinal round. Likewise, the Midget Minor Jacks impressed in their semi-final appearance. Facing elimination, the Jr. Jacks forced overtime and with a trip to the title game hanging in the balance, Odessa tallied the game-winning goal with just seven seconds left in the extra session.
“I thought we worked hard all year long,” said Margettie on Monday, “The commitment was definitely there and our players stepped it up and now we find ourselves in the state finals.”
Both teams had lofty aspirations all season and now, Margettie says, the task at hand has become clear. “Our goal is to bring home a state trophy,” said Margettie, “We’re just gonna go down there and give it our all and hopefully Jacks fans will be cheering for us.”
