JACKS SNAP SKID WITH HUGE WIN OVER TORNADO
FRISCO, TX – With a league-wide season-long 11-game regulation losing streak hanging over their heads, the Odessa Jackalopes righted the ship Saturday, earning their first win since early November in a 3-2 victory over the defending Robertson Cup champion Texas Tornado at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas.
In his first appearance as a Jackalope, new Odessa netminder Nick Deery, acquired last week from the NAHL Central Division’s Brookings Blizzard, stole the show, stopping 34 of the 36 shots he faced, helping the Jacks improve to 5-21-2 overall this season.
Taylor Portner started the scoring for Odessa Saturday, staking the Jacks to a 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season just 15 seconds into the second period. Josh Racek doubled the Odessa lead in the final minute of the second and early in the third, Jimmy Peplinski wired the eventual game-winner high to the glove side past Tornado netminder Jerry Kaukinen.
Texas responded in the final stanza, netting a pair of goals from Louie Rowe and Brandon Hawkins and despite a furious Texas rally in the closing moments, the Jackalopes held on for a signiture win.
Next up for the Jacks, it’s a two-game weekend homestand with the Jacks taking on the Corpus Christi IceRays for the first time this season. Friday’s game at Ector County Coliseum will be just the third South Division clash for the Jacks this year not vs. the NAHL’s top three teams, Topeka, Amarillo and Texas.
