Odessa, TX (October 8, 2016) – The Jackalopes traveled to Shreveport to take on the Mudbugs for the first time since 2011 between these two squads. Both teams were a part of the CHL until the Mudbugs folded in 2011 and the Jacks switched to the NAHL.
The first period was just what you expected it to be to start. The Jackalopes got on the board early with a 4-on-4 goal by Ryan MacKellar that hit the glove of Mudbugs goaltender, John Roberts, and dribbled past him into the net to put the Jacks up 1-0. Later in the period, Shreveport’s Garrett Hallford netted a good looking goal that beat Jacks goaltender, Jonny Hogue top shelf on the near side of the net.
Towards the end of the first, Zach Zech and Brandon Krumpshcmid were involved in a scuffle with Steven Mather of the Mudbugs, in which Mather punched a Jackalope in the face, leading to a 5-minute major, and ejecting him from the game.
Going into the second period tied, the Jacks Zach Zech netted the go-ahead goal just under two minutes into the period. They did not let up as Trevor Zenas put another one past Roberts, prompting a goalie change by Mudbugs head coach Karlis Zirnis.
That didn’t stop the Jacks as Cooper Zech added one of his own later on past new goaltender Dyllan Lubbesmeyer, making it 4-1 Jackalopes with the lead. Connor Stuart had a holding penalty called on him that lead to a goal by Frankie Melton, as Melton split two defenders and lifted a puck top shelf past Hogue to bring the Mudbugs within 2. Two kick saves that seemed impossible by Jonny Hogue kept the Jackalopes with a 2-goal lead heading into the 3rd.
Entering the third leading 4-2, the Jackalopes just had to hold on. Halfway through the third, a shot was deflected up and towards Hogue in net. Hogue got checked to the ice as the puck went off the hip of Erik Zohovs and in past Hogue. The refs emphatically pointed towards the neck, calling it a goal. The Jackalopes were livid, with Hogue throwing the net and the coaching staff yelling towards the officials. What could have a turning point in the game for the Mudbugs ended up doing nothing, as the Jacks killed off a late penalty to win the game 4-3.
Jonny Hogue saved 41 of 44 shots that he faced in the game, increasing his record to 3-2 in 5 games on the season. The Jackalopes record is now 5-3 on the year with another game tomorrow night against the Mudbugs. 7:11 puck drop in Shreveport.
