JACKS SURRENDER FIVE STRAIGHT THIRD PERIOD GOALS IN 7-3 DEFEAT

Dzhioshvilli nets hat trick for ‘Rays; Waxin-Engback continues six-game point streak

ODESSA, TX – After giving a late third period lead last night, the Odessa Jackalopes looked to rebound Friday night against the Corpus Christi IceRays in Odessa.

The game started much like Thursday night’s affair, with both teams getting Grade A opportunities on one another, but both netminders standing tall. It was the Jackalopes who broke through first at 16:38 of the period. Lane Valimont took a pass from Christian Hausinger and fired the puck wide of the net. Hampus Sjodahl was standing off to the side of the goal and deposited his 13th goal of the season. The Jacks outshot Corpus Christi 11-8 in the frame and took a 1-0 lead after one period of play.

In the second period, the IceRays responded quickly. Tanner Lomsnes and Maskim Dzhioshvilli (GEE-oh-SVILL-EE) scored back-to-back tallies and 1:54 into the period, the ‘Rays had their first lead of the contest. The Jacks came back firing, and when play opened up late in the period, Andreas Soje scored his first goal of the season on a shot from the bottom of the right circle to tie the game up at 2-2. The Jacks outshot Corpus Christi 9-8 in the period and had momentum on their side going into the final 20 minutes of play.

The Jacks would take their second lead of the hockey game 1:54 into the third. Razmuz Waxin-Engback rushed the puck up the right wing boards and found defenseman Lane Valimont all alone on the left circle. Valimont fired a slap shot past ‘Rays goaltender Luke Pikar to give the Jackalopes a 3-2 advantage. The lead was short lived. At 5:47, Maskim Dzhioshvilli scored his second of the contest on a nice goal mouth pass from Joe Chitwood to knot it a 3-3. Just 57 seconds later, Dzhioshvilli completed the hat trick, scoring from well out on the right wing. His fifth goal of the year put the ‘Rays on top, 4-3. After a scrum to the side of the Jackalopes net, Kenny Hausinger (Sacred Heart) was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for slew-footing IceRays forward Tanner Lomsnes. The ‘Rays cashed in three times on the five minute man-advantage and distanced themselves from the Jacks by a count of 7-3. By the time the penalty was killed, the Jackalopes deficit proved insurmountable, as the IceRays took the decision by a final score of 7-3.
