JACKS SCRAP TO THE END, FALL 5-3 IN HOME FINALE
Feemster, Taff and Portner all score in loss to Corpus Christi.
ODESSA, TX – In front of nearly 2,700 fans in the final home game of the 2012-13 regular season, the Odessa Jackalopes fell Wednesday by a 5-3 final score to the Corpus Christi IceRays at Ector County Coliseum. With the loss, Odessa’s franchise-record 17th consecutive game without a win, the Jacks fell to 6-47-3 overall this season and with 15 points, remain alone in sixth place in the NAHL’s South Division standings.
One night removed from a commanding, 8-2 win, Corpus Christi started strong on Wednesday, staking themselves to a 3-0 first period lead thanks to goals from Rudy Sulmonte, Emil Romig and Perry D’Arrisso. In the second period, Grant Hutton’s second of the weekend made it 4-0 ‘Rays at 3:33 before Odessa finally punched back at 5:07 on John Feemster’s second score of the season, a floating wrist shot from the center point, assisted by Matt Volonnino and Mike Mezzano, that put Odessa on the board at 4-1.
From there, the Jackalopes’ offense perked up, netting goals from Chris Taff at 5:49, on feeds from Stephen Inman and Taylor Portner on the power-play, and Portner at 17:23 of the third on a redirection of a Dylan Campbell shot, assisted by Anthony Olguin that drew Odessa within a goal at 4-3. A late Andrew Paras empty-netter sealed it for the IceRays who improved to 26-24-6 with the victory and pulled a commanding six points ahead of idle Wichita Falls for the final South Division playoff spot with just four games remaining on their schedule.
Next up for the Jacks, it’s a four game road-swing to round out the 2012-13 regular season, beginning Friday at 7:15 pm at Kay Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls.
