Odessa, TX – Another three-goal third period lifted the Odessa Jackalopes (30-21-3-2) over the Topeka RoadRunners (17-34-2-2) in the rubber match of the weekend series. Odessa is now only one win away from securing third in the division.
The Jackalopes found themselves ahead in the first again thanks to Dylan Johnson. Matt Hutton received a puck at the blue line before spinning and firing one in front for Johnson. Instead of taking the shot right away, Johnson’s patience paid off as he waited out Sam Metcalf for the open net goal late in the first period.
Odessa doubled their lead in the second period on their first power play of the night. Zac Herrmann carried the puck east to west behind the goal, before threading the needle to Ricky Carballo. As everyone thought Carballo would pull the trigger, he did the unselfish thing and centered to Matt Brown who one-timed one past Metcalf for his 12th tally this year.
Topeka would turn the tables quickly on Odessa and pull themselves back within one only 27 seconds later as Dallas Tulik netted his second of the weekend.
The Jacks would regain their two-goal lead early in the third behind Brown’s second of the contest. Brown bodied down a clearing attempt from Topeka, and put it on the backhand to shovel his second of the night past Metcalf.
Topeka cut the deficit to one as Max Finner tallied his 5th of the season on a tight angle shot.
The Jacks headed to the penalty kill with only 2:42 remaining in regulation. It didn’t matter Odessa was shorthanded as Matt Brown started an odd-man rush with Blake Bride. Brown fired one off the post, but Bride cleaned up the garbage to double the lead before Viktor Johansson iced the game 20 seconds later on an empty netter.
Brett Epp stood on his head while make 40 saves in the contest, while Metcalf blocked 41 in the Topeka loss.
The jacks return to action next weekend with a chance to secure third place in the south, needing one victory to do so in Corpus Christi against the IceRays.
