JACKS END EIGHT-GAME SLIDE WITH 4-2 WIN OVER WILDCATS
Big night for Hampus Sjodahl cements Jacks third home win of season
ODESSA, TX – The Jacks came into play tonight winless in their last eight games. Their last victory came on October 30th against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The Jacks battled the Wichita Falls Wildcats on Friday night, who came in riding a six-game winning streak. Odessa had fared pretty well against the 15-4-0 Wildcats thus far in the 2014-15 season, with a 1-1-1 record against the ‘Cats. Robin Johansson got the call in goal for the Jackalopes. The ‘Cats countered with second-year netminder David Zenik.
In the first period, the Jacks scored first on the power play when Derek Brown deflected a Razmuz Waxin-Engback shot past Zevnik to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead. Brown’s eighth tally of the season had the Jacks off and running. At 9:55 of the period, the Jackalopes did something they had not done in 23 previous games, scoring a shorthanded goal off the stick on Hampus Sjodahl. The unassisted tally by Sjodahl had the Jacks up 2-0 after one period of play.
The Wildcats got their legs moving in the second period. Colin Staub scored at 15:55 of the period after an Ian Mansfield penalty put the Jackalopes a man down. The goal cut the Jacks lead to one goal going into the third.
In the third, the Jacks took a two-goal lead at 2:55 off a rebound from a Derek Brown shot, Hampus Sjodahl put in his second goal of the game and eighth goal of the season. The Wildcats answered back at 5:05, when Air Force commit Alex Falconer scored on a rebound from in close on Robin Johansson to make it 3-2 Jacks. Late in the game, with the Wichita Falls net empty, the Jacks won the faceoff in their zone, shot it around the boards and Kenny Hausinger skated the puck down the ice and filled the yawning net to give the Jacks a 4-2 advantage. The Jacks would put the finishing touches on a 4-2 win in front of 945 fans at the Ector County Coliseum. The Jacks victory on home ice means they have yet to lose in regulation time this season at the JackShack (2-0-2)
The Jacks finish out a two-game set with the Wichita Falls Wildcats Saturday night at the Ector County Coliseum. The Jacks will auction their special military jerseys at the conclusion of the game tomorrow night. All veterans or active servicemen or women are free of charge. The voice of the Jacks, Joey Battaino has the call of the action at 6:50 CST on FASTHockey and Classic Rock 102.1 FM.
In 2014-15, the Odessa Jackalopes will embark upon their fourth season in the North American Hockey League and 18th in the Permian Basin. Season tickets are on sale now!
