JACKS DROP RUBBER MATCH IN TOPEKA, 3-2

Thompson, Cayemberg both score in Odessa’s second consecutive loss.

TOPEKA, KS– In the finale of a three-game weekend series in Topeka, Kansas, the Odessa Jackalopes fell to the Topeka RoadRunners 3-2 on Sunday evening at Landon Arena, inside the Kansas ExpoCentre. The loss, the Jackalopes’ second in as many days, dropped Odessa to 3-5-1 overall on the season and with seven points, sunk the Jacks into a tie for fifth place in the NAHL’s South Division standings with the Corpus Christi IceRays.

One night removed from a 5-0 loss at the hands of the ‘Runners, the Jacks stormed out to a 2-0 lead on Sunday, as Pat Thompson’s unassisted even-strength wrister at 3:41 of the first period, his second goal of the season, and Tyler Cayemberg’s second tally this year, a power-play one-timer at 10:08 on feeds from Austin Ho and Taylor Portner, put Odessa on top by two early on.

Topeka drew within a goal at 17:33 of the first, as a Sean Gaffney marker, his second in two games, made it 2-1. In the second period, the Jackalopes failed to score while the RoadRunners kept the pressure on, potting their second and third unanswered goals at 8:05 and 10:21 respectively, courtesy of Trace Strahle and Drew Kariofiles. Despite a furious Odessa rally in the final minute of regulation, a scoreless third period gave way to Topeka’s 3-2 victory in the game and 2-1 edge in the series.

In his first game with Odessa, native Canadian Andrew Pikul impressed in net, stopping 34 of the 37 shots he faced on Sunday en route to the loss.

Next up for the Jacks, it’s a two game set in Amarillo Thursday and Friday night with both games scheduled for 7:00 pm start times at Cal Farley Coliseum at Amarillo Civic Center.
