JACKS CLAW BACK IN THIRD FOR 2-1 WIN
Lapic, Robert the heroes in come-from-behind victory.
ODESSA, TX– For just the second time all season, the Odessa Jackalopes found a way to win a game in which they trailed entering the third period, storming back with a pair of late goals to defeat the Wenatchee Wild 2-1 on Saturday at Ector County Coliseum. With the win, the Jackalopes drew even in their season series with Wenatchee at two wins apiece and with 24 points, improved their record to 10-13-4 on the season.
After trailing 1-0 for the majority of regulation, the Jackalopes tied the game at 6:51 of the third period, when Darren Lapic poked a rebound play past Wenatchee goaltender Greg Lewis for his second goal of the season on feeds from Lawrence Cornellier and Tyler Minx. Then, with time ticking away in regulation, on an odd-man Odessa rush, Tyller Robert notched his first goal of the season, a follow-up chance on a Matt Williams shot that proved to be the game winner, with Tyler Poulsen earning a secondary assist on the play.
After Friday’s poor showing on the penalty-kill (four power-play goals allowed) the Jacks’ man down unit rebounded in a big way on Saturday, going a perfect five-for-five on the penalty kill against a potent Wenatchee power-play that entered Saturday with the best road conversion rate in the NAHL at upwards of 30%.
One night removed from a 21 save performance, Jacks netminder Connor Hellebuyck kept his team in the game down the stretch, making 18 third-period saves and stopping 37 total shots to earn his ninth win of the season. Next up for the Jacks, it’s a two-game home-and-home series with the league-best Amarillo Bulls. The Jacks will head to Amarillo on Friday before returning home for a Saturday clash with the Bulls in Odessa, the final Jackalopes contest before the weeklong Christmas break.
The Odessa Jackalopes celebrate their 15th Anniversary in 2011-12 and drop the puck on their inaugural campaign as a member of the North American Hockey League.
