Corpus Christi, TX – Five unanswered goals from the Odessa Jackalopes (26-16-3-2) gave them the lead midway through the second period in a 5-3 win over the Corpus Christi IceRays (22-19-5-3) on Friday night at the American Bank Center. With the win, Odessa expanded their lead for 3rd to five points over the IceRays.
The IceRays got on the board first as they tallied two in the first 5:29 of the game on Odessa’s Alex Camarre.
The Jacks, being the resilient team they are, fought back for five unanswered goals to build a big lead. Ricky Carballo cut the deficit in half on his 21st birthday with a goal 8:33 into the first period on a back-handed shovel past Corpus Christi’s Jake Acton.
Viktor Johansson forced the officials to stop play after slamming Garrett Hallford into the board, shattering the glass. After the delay, Zac Herrmann would add another with less than five-minutes remaining in the opening frame as he beat Acton through the five-hole to tie the game at two.
Another glass delay with 1:13 remaining in the first period prompted another stop and the first intermission to take place. The teams finished off the first period and swapper sides for the second to begin.
The Jacks didn’t have to wait long as Viktor Johansson played tic-tac-toe with Petr Miko and Jared Christy before Christy beat Acton for the first Odessa lead of the contest. Petr Miko would add one of his own later on as he fought through a slash from Pavel Koreshkov and had it bounce off his skate and in.
Matt Brown would add his 10th of the year 4:28 into the third period for the fifth straight Odessa goal. Penalties late sealed the deal for Odessa, but not before Brendan Miller beat Camarre for a shorthanded goal with 1:35 left in regulation.
Camarre made 28 saves en route to the victory for Odessa, while Acton could only stop 32 shots from Odessa. The Jackalopes penalty kill was a perfect 4-4 on the night, helping to propel the Jacks win.
Odessa and Corpus Christi return to action tomorrow night to finish off the weekend at the American Bank Center. Catch all the action starting with the Town & Country Pregame show at 6:50 pm.
