Amarillo, TX – The Amarillo Bulls (13-14-4-3) netted the game-winner with only 1:15 remaining in regulation to take out the Odessa Jackalopes (21-13-2-1) by a score of 5-4 on Thursday night. The matchup was the first of a three-game set in Amarillo this weekend.
The first period was one of the most offensive battles the Jackalopes have had all season, and the first time in a while Odessa scored first in a match. Only 4:11 into the opening frame, it was the newcomer, Jared Christy, who nets his first as a member of the Jackalopes. Christy received a great pass from Lucas Herrmann and fought through a tie-up with the Bulls defense to lift the puck in for the early lead.
Amarillo would get three breakaways the over the span of six and a half minutes and net all three of them past Brett Epp for a 3-1 lead with just under four minutes remaining.
The Jacks would get some life back once again as Zac Herrmann nets his first goal since September 29th in Corpus Christi. A power play was set up and allowed Herrmann to wind up for a one-timer with 3:30 remaining in the first period to bring Odessa back within one.
Petr Miko tied the game at three at the 11:32 mark of the second period thanks to some quick passing from his linemates. Viktor Johansson dropped a pass for Zach Heintz who one-timed it to Miko for the backhanded lift to beat Amarillo’s Jason Grande for the tie game.
Odessa would take an early lead again in the third as Jared Christy netted his second of the contest. Evan Somoza began a breakaway on a power play before feeding Jared Christy to fakeout Grande for the 4-3 lead only 1:39 into the final frame.
Amarillo would tie the contest up five minutes later on a one-timer in the slot, but would put the final dagger in Odessa with 1:15 left in the contest. Amarillo took a couple Jacks out behind the play, prompting a breakaway for the Bulls. The initial shot was saved by Epp, but as he had players on top of him, Brett Abdelnour netted his second of the contest to give Amarillo the win.
Odessa’s Brett Epp made 30 saves in the contest while his counterpart, Jason Grande, earned the win on 38 saves.
