Jackalopes Drop Series Finale

Jackalopes looked to finish off the series against the Shreveport Mudbugs with a clean sweep on Sunday in Shreveport. They were not able to do so, as the Mudbugs took the game 4-2

In the first period, Chase Thudium had an early goal on some great passing from Chris Donaldson and Noah Poindexter. Poindexter left the puck for Donaldson who had to beat two defenders in order to get the puck to Thudium. Thudium was able to beat the goaltender from the slot, with a wrister under the glove.

Later in the period, Cooper Zech took a shot that was blocked, then Poindexter did the same before the puck found Thudium’s stick, where he was able to take a shot past Mudbugs’ goaltender Dyllan Lubbesmeyer for his and the Jackalopes second goal on the game. Thudium now leads the Jackalopes with 6 total goals on the season.

Later in the period, Tomass Zeile fired a hard slapshot from the point with traffic in front of Jackalopes netminder, Jon Flakne. The puck ended up hitting off the body of Shawn O’Malley in his first game of the weekend for the Mudbugs, and redirected past Jon Flakne in net. The goal by O’Malley pulled Shreveport within one goal.

Dangerous play in the second period. Gourgiei Feduolov took down Noah Poindexter from behind for a tripping call, as Poindexted slid head first into the end boards. The penalty resulted in a 5-minute major and a game ejection for Feduolov. The Jacks weren’t able to take advantage of the penalty. Instead, Hausinger took a 2-minute minor for slashing that cut into the time on the man advantage. No goals in the period had the Jacks still with the 2-1 lead entering the third period.

This is where things turned south for the Jackalopes. Just over a minute into the period, the Mudbugs were just trying to keep the puck in the attacking zone with a shot on net, and Kieran Durgan was in the way for a redirect that scored past Flakne to make it 2-2. 40 seconds later, Kristaps Jakobsons came racing down the left side of the ice and threw a puck on net that beat Flakne near side to take the lead.

The Jackalopes tried to get something going by hitting hard and getting some good shots off on net, but nothing helped. With five minutes remaining in the period, the Mudbugs put one more in the back of the net on a great passing display between Shawn O’Malley, Frankie Melton, and Kieran Durgan. Durgan received a backside pass form Melton that had Flakne beat from the start.

The Jacks pulled their goaltender with 2:12 remaining in regulation, hoping for two more goals to take it into overtime. Unfortunately, the game ended with the Mudbugs winning 4-2, splitting the weekend series.

Jackalopes head to Corpus Christi to take on the IceRays next weekend. 7:05 pm puck drop for both games on Friday and Saturday.
