Shreveport, LA – The Shreveport Mudbugs (40-9-3-2) mounted a two-goal comeback in the third to edge the Odessa Jackalopes (28-20-3-2) 3-2 in regulation. Despite the loss, Amarillo dropped their game as well, punching the Jackalopes 2018 postseason ticket.
The Jackalopes broke through first in Saturday’s contest only 5:08 into the first period. Ricky Carballo led Viktor Johansson into the offensive zone for a two-on-one breakaway. Johansson stopped on a dime along the right boards before feeding Petr Miko in front of the net. Miko tapped the one-timer past Shreveport’s Jaxon Castor for the Jacks first lead at the Hirsch Coliseum this season.
Shreveport turned up the heat in the second period, but Odessa was able to build themselves a two-goal lead. Zac Herrmann stole a puck and led Ricky Carballo on a four-on-one breakaway before he sniped one top-shelf past Castor to double the lead.
The Mudbugs’ would cut the deficit back in half with only 4.4 seconds left in the middle frame during some four-on-four action.
Shreveport got two more early in the third as miscommunication behind the Jackalopes net helped the game-winner for the Mudbugs.
Brett Epp made 34 big stops in the contest during the loss, while Castor stopped 30 of his own for the victory.
The Jackalopes return to action next weekend when they host the Topeka RoadRunners for three games at the Ector County Coliseum. It will be the Jackalopes 10th annual Shriners Weekend, with specialty jerseys capped off by the jersey auction Saturday night after the game.
