HOME COOKIN’: JACKS WIN FIFTH OF LAST SIX AT THE JACK SHACK
Led by a three-point night by Chris Taff and two goals from Alex Alger, the Jacks sting the Bees, 5-3.
ODESSA, TX – On Friday night, the Odessa Jackalopes were looking to build on a 3-2 victory in Topeka versus the RoadRunners, last Saturday. The Jacks went back to Eric Hancock in goal, who was looking for his fourth win in his last five starts. Rio Grande Valley went back to Nick Schmit, who had won both of his starts this season against Odessa.
In the first, the Jacks struck first at 6:48 on Mathieu Briand’s seventh goal of the season. Tate Sykes took a shot from the right circle that was deflected off of Briand’s stick into the top shelf. The Killer Bees would tie at 11:17 on Evan Schmidbauer’s ninth goal of the year. Schmidbauer deflected an Anthony Croston pass over the shoulder of Eric Hancock. Shots in the first period were 13 apiece and the score was deadlocked at one.
In the second, the Jacks would score their first of two power play goals when Alex Alger scored at 5:31 from Cody Slocum and Chris Taff. Alger snapped a shot over the glove of Nick Schmit. Alger would score again to give the Jacks a 3-1 lead at 17:01. The Jacks popped in their second power play goal of the period at 19:52 when Leo Lumm scored his sixth goal of the season. Lumm tapped the puck home after he was fed by Razmuz Waxin-Engback. The Jacks took a 4-1 lead into the third.
The Jacks would add another at 8:20 of the third on a breakaway goal by Razmuz Waxin-Engback. His fourth goal of the year came off an area pass by Chris Taff that sprung Waxin-Engback behind the Rio Grande Valley defense. Rio would cut the lead to down to two, but the Jacks would hang on to win their fifth out of their last six games at the Ector County Coliseum. Eric Hancock made 22 saves to pick up his fourth win of the season and Chris Taff added three assists in the Jacks 10th victory of the season.
The win brings the Jacks to within two points of the fifth-place Corpus Christi IceRays, and 11 points out of a playoff spot.
