BULLS ESCAPE ODESSA RALLY, 2-1
Amarillo outlasts Jacks in grinding, physical affair.
ODESSA, TX– In front of nearly 3,000 Odessa faithful, the Odessa Jackalopes dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision Saturday night to the first-place Amarillo Bulls in Ector County Coliseum. With the loss, the Jacks fall to 5-6-2 on the season and remain alone in fifth place in the NAHL’s South Division with 12 points so far in 2011-12.
A physical tone was set early in the contest by both teams as the Bulls and Jacks finished their checks from the get-go in a game that featured a grand total of 62 penalty minutes and eight fighting majors. Jacks defenseman Tyler Minx led all skaters with eight penalty minutes in the game.
After a fast-paced opening few minutes, the Bulls struck first as Amarillo defenseman Karl Beckman scored his second goal of the season at 9:29 of the first to give his team a 1-0 lead, which the Bulls carried to the first intermission. The Jacks responded late in the second to tie the game at one as Chad Hennum netted his fourth goal in two games and his ninth point of the season (6G, 3A) on the power-play at 14:49 on feeds from Ryan Atkinson and Alex Ostrowski, pulling into second on the teams scoring list and taking the team lead in goals scored. The game’s only other tally came with just 30 seconds remaining in the second period as Bulls forward Joe Kozlak tipped a Brandon Lubin wrister past Connor Hellebuyck for the decisive marker.
Despite handing the NAHL’s second best power-play seven opportunities, the Jackalopes were perfect on the penalty-kill Saturday, going seven-for-seven, with a one-for-four effort on the man advantage. Despite the loss, Hellebuyck was stellar in net again for the Jacks as he stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced in the game.
Up next for Odessa, it’s the tail-end of a four-game homestand as the Jacks host the Topeka RoadRunners for a pair of games October 27th and 29th at Ector County Coliseum.
