Odessa, Texas (Aug. 4, 2015)- The Odessa Jackalopes officially concluded their Main Camp in Chicago, held from July 31-Aug.2. The Camp included a total of 76 players fighting for 25 roster spots.
The invite-only tryout Camp was the last chance for Head Coach Greg Gatto and staff to evaluate players on the ice before deciding on an official roster later this month. The camp included draftees, tenders, veterans and invites.
The Jackalopes plan to return 4 to 5 defenseman in 2015-16 and Gatto hopes it will add a veteran, physical presence that was lacking from last year's squad. Gatto said, “last year we scored a lot of goals, but this year were going to be a bigger, faster, and more defensively minded… and that's going to help our goaltenders. Everyone is excited about their team at this time of year, but we think we're going to have a much-improved club.”
One thing that certain, the Jacks roster will be comprised of two goalies, eight defensemen and fifteen forwards in 2015. Gatto said of the roster, “it’s a fluid situation, and we may add one European player, and see what players are available following United States Hockey League (USHL) camps.” Gatto also noted, “the best players on the ice during camp were the returning players, and that’s what you want.”
Once the roster is set, players will arrive in Odessa on Aug. 30 and begin skating Aug. 31, as the Jacks prepare for opening night at Amarillo on Sept. 12.
