Fifth place IceRays sweep Odessa over weekend, Jacks force OT Fri. earn point

Odessa, TXThe Odessa Jackalopes swept Corpus Christi in their first matchup back on Nov. 13-14, but the IceRays found redemption on Thursday and Friday. In both games Odessa broke through for the first goal but couldn’t hold onto the first-period advantage. On Thursday, Jon Russell collected his first goal as a Jack in his second game at 6:46 of the first. Nathan Bryer and Mason Krueger responded for Corpus in the opening frame to give the Rays a 2-1 lead, before Hampus Sjodahl tied the game at 15:42 of the first. Colton Meekhof recaptured the lead for Corpus in the second and neither team would score again. After the 3-2 loss on Thursday, the Jacks looked for a series split in game two. After Brandon Tucker got the Jacks on the board early, Corpus again countered, this time netting three unanswered goals including two by Andy McGlynn. After Connor Stuart had scored his first goal as a Jack before the end of the first, Eric Carreras tied it 3-3 in the second on the power play. Corpus regained its lead shortly thereafter. In the third, Oliver Celec forced overtime with a long-distance slap shot. In the extra time, Tobias Kircher split the jacks defense and beat Gunner Rivers to get the overtime winner and complete the sweep.

Harvard commit’ Russell producing for Jacks

In his first two games with the Jacks, ex-Des Moines Buccaneer forward (USHL) Jon Russell, 17, has found a quick comfort level in the Permian Basin. Russell collected points in his first two games with the Jacks including a goal on Friday night versus Corpus. Russell, who attended the Jacks camp in the summer, is committed to play at Harvard in 2017-18.
