Jacks sweep Bulls with shootout win, 4-3

Amarillo, Texas (JAN 23, 2016) – The Odessa Jackalopes couldn’t avoid a third-period collapse Saturday night at Amarillo Civic Center against the Bulls, but the West Texan’s managed to earn both points on Danny Kiraly a shootout winner, 4-3. Tyler Gernhofer nearly ruined Odessa first sweep against Amarillo in team history with his unanswered third-period hat trick, but the Jacks weathered the Bulls late flurry and earned their second shootout win of the year.

Odessa failed to score on both of their opening period power plays, but a tremendous back-door pass by Derek Brown onto the stick of Kiraly (7) in which Kiraly snuck it over the left shoulder of Anton Martinsson was all Odessa needed to earn an opening period lead, 1-0.

In the second, Dakoda Menslage held in a Bulls clearing attempt just inside the blue line and threw it on the net where Eric Carreras (14) collected the rebound and went around Martinsson’s crease before depositing it in the open net at 4:42 to make it 2-0. Brennen Miller then netted his third goal in his last two games when he sniped a high-slot shot past the left pad of Martinsson at 10:11 to complete the two-goal second and give the Jacks a 3-0 lead after two.

The Bulls woke up from the dead in the third and snapped a ten-period goalless streak at 4:16 on a Gernhofer (6) power play snipe from a sharp angle. Gernhofer (7) made it two-for-two on the power play in the third when he again snuck a sharp angle shot over Dean Shatzer at 9:10 to make it 3-2. The Vermont commit Gernhofer (8) completed the third-period hat trick with a far side rip as he entered the attacking zone down the right wing.

In the shootout, the Jacks sent Kiraly out first, and the Alaska-Fairbanks commit showed off nifty hands to sneak a forehand deke around Martinsson’s left pad. Dean Shatzer denied all three Bulls including Gernhofer at the end to earn the Jacks second straight win.

Shatzer (6-10-3) made 30 saves on 34 shots while Anton Martinsson (8-21-4) took the shootout loss saving 40 of the 43 shots faced.

The Jacks return home next Friday and Saturday for a pair of games against the Lone Star Brahmas on Jan. 29-30 for Bud Light ice scrapper and rally towel giveaway nights.
