Jacks lose seesaw battle to Bulls, 8-5

Amarillo, TX (FEB 12, 2016) – The Odessa Jackalopes led three times Friday night, but a resilient Amarillo Bulls team proved too much as the Jacks fell 8-5 at the Amarillo Civic Center Friday night. Hampus Sjodahl continued his dominance over the Amarillo this season in the opening period. First on the power play (21) at 8:21 and then the Bemidji State-bound center (22) potted his second of the period at 11:48. The Bulls weathered the Jacks early flurry and countered with two unanswered goals to end the first. Mykyta Sheptysky (1) right of the draw made it 2-1 at the 12:11 mark and then Jake Houston (2) finished off a Bulls odd-man rush at 19:07 to tie the game 2-2.

In the second, the Jacks took eight penalties including a minor double game-misconduct to Brandon Tucker for spearing. Despite being on the PK for a majority of the second frame, Derek Brown (7) gave Odessa its second lead at full strength at4:43 before but Coale Norris (2) tied it 3-3 on the power play at 7:52. Less than a minute later, Cooper Zech (5) pushed the Jacks lead back up to one on a shorthanded 2-on-1, but the pesky Bulls again found the tying goal when Charlie Singerhouse (16) score at 18:55.

The Bulls finally took their first lead in the third when Singerhouse stole a loose puck from Jon Russell in the neutral zone and beat Jon Flakne on a break away at 5:39. Nate Werhane (2) quickly tied the game from the point at 7:26, but a long shift, icing, and a lost defensive zone draw was just enough for Liam Ferguson (4) to net the Bulls sixth goal to make it 6-5. Amarillo added a pair of empty-net goals by Joey Molinaro (14) at 18:16 and Norris (3) at 19:42 to earn their first win against the Jacks in regulation since September 12.

Brian Baker earned the win in his debut stopping 25 of the 30 shots faced while Jon Flakne (1-3-0) suffered his first lost making 34 saves on 40 shots.

The Jacks and Bulls play their final game at the Amarillo Civic Center in the 2015-16 regular season Saturday night as the Jacks try to earn a series split against their longtime rival.
