JACKS DROP TIGHT ONE, 4-2
Hennum extends hot hand in back-and-forth loss.
ODESSA, TX– In the first of a pair of weekend games with the Topeka RoadRunners, the Odessa Jackalopes fell short on Thursday, dropping a 4-2 decision to Topeka at Ector County Coliseum in Odessa. With the loss the Jacks fall to 5-7-2 on the season, but remain alone in fifth place in the NAHL’s South Division standings with 12 points.
The Jacks came out of the gates swinging in the first period, outshooting the RoadRunners 12-10, but a late first-period goal from Ben Bahe gave Topeka a 1-0 advantage heading into the first intermission. The early deficit proved to be a bad omen for Odessa, as after Thursday’s loss, the Jacks fall to 0-6-0 in 2011-12 when allowing the first goal of games.
After a Robbie Davis power-play marker made it 2-0 Topeka midway through the second, the Jacks responded with a power-play tally of their own, as Chad Hennum scored his fifth goal in his last three games, a point-blank score on a feed from Bryan Mitchell and Jared Docken at 11:18 of the period to draw the Jacks within a goal. The goal was Hennum’s team-leading seventh of the season, and leaves him alone in second place on the team scoring list with ten points so far in 2011-12.
Unfortunately, the offensive pushback wasn’t sustained, as Topeka rattled off back-to-back goals to go up 4-1 before Jalen Krogman, sprung on a breakaway courtesy of a beautiful stretch pass from Bryan Mitchell, earned his second goal and eleventh point of the season at 9:30 of the third period on the power-play to draw Odessa within a pair of goals at 4-2.
Jackalopes netminder Justin Davis turned in a solid performance in his fourth start of the season, stopping 34 of 38 shots and tallying the first assist for any Odessa goalie this year, a secondary helper on Krogman’s third period goal.
Next up for the Jacks, it’s the finale of their two-game series with Topeka and their four-game homestand, as they drop the puck with the RoadRunners Saturday night at 7:05 at Ector County Coliseum.
The Odessa Jackalopes celebrate their 15th Anniversary in 2011-12 and drop the puck on their inaugural campaign as a member of the North American Hockey League.
