The Odessa Jackalopes, members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), have traded goaltender Gunner Rivers to the Minot Minotauros (NAHL) for goaltender Jon Flakne and a condition 5th round pick in the 2016 NAHL Draft on June 7.
Rivers, 20, was acquired by Odessa on September 16, 2015, for a tender contract from the Lone Star Brahmas. Rivers began his Jacks career red-hot going 6-1-0 in his first seven starts. The Ottawa, ON, CAN native finished off is Odessa stint with a 7-8-1 record, 3.73 goals-against average and a .880 save percentage in 17 games played. Rivers spent the last four years in the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL).
Rivers who was the second star of the week in the NAHL South Division for the week of October 12, 2015, after a pair of back-to-back 4-2 wins over the Topeka RoadRunners will join a Minot club (20-16-3) that has won two-straight games and sits in a three-way tie with the Austin Bruins and Bismarck Bobcats for first place in the Central Division. After Odessa’s sweep of Amarillo over the weekend, the Jacks are now 13-8-4, six points behind the Corpus Christi IceRays for the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division.
Flakne, 19, gives Odessa a goaltender with one more year of junior eligibility compared to Rivers who is in his final year of Junior Hockey. The Maple Plaine, MN native is coming off a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Magicians on Jan. 22 in which he stopped 24-of-26 shots faced. Flakne is 7-6-2 on the year with a 2.78 goals-against average and a .892 save percentage.
Odessa returns home Friday and Saturday for a pair of games against the Lone Star Brahmas. On Friday, Jan. 29, fans will receive a Bud Light ice scraper and on Saturday, Jan. 30 fans will receive a Jackalopes rally towel courtesy of Johny Carino’s and Coca-Cola.
