Odessa, Texas (JAN 29, 2016) – The Odessa Jackalopes (13-18-4) nearly turned in its largest comeback of the year Friday with two unanswered goals in the third, but a slow start proved too much as the Jacks fell, 4-2, to the Lone Star Brahmas (24-8-7) at Ector County Coliseum. In just his 13th game of the year, Taylor Gatto dropped the gloves for the third time this season and also potted his first goal of the year.
In the first, Alex Berardinelli showed off why he leads the Brahmas in goals at 6:40 mark when he corralled a misplayed puck in his own-zone and blazed past the defense before sniping a shot over Dean Shatzer’s glove on a breakaway. Odessa again misplayed the puck in the offensive zone and the Brahmas against capitalized when Martin Mellberg (10) scored on a 2-on-1 pass that hit off his hip as he fell to the ice at 13:07.
In the second, the Jacks and Brahmas each had a power play and each pumped 12 shots on net, but neither team was able to break through. At 15:19, Tomas Brejcha and Gatto dropped the gloves exchanging haymakers before tying one another up and falling to the ice.
In the third, Brandon Estes (1) snuck a seeing-eye wrister past Shatzer to extend Lone Star’s lead to 3-0. The Jacks would make it a game when Gray Marr (11) erased the shutout with a power play goal (12:05) in which he corralled a Derek Brown shot from the point and snuck it past Connor O’Brien. Gatto (1) made it real interesting when he back-handed a follow-up shot over the far right pad of O’Brien at 14:53. Any Jacks comeback hopes were squandered when Berardinelli scored his second with an empty netter at 19:19.
Dean Shatzer took the loss (6-11-3) making 28 saves on 31 shots. Connor O’Brien (8-3-5) earned his first win of the year against Odessa making 28 saves on 30 shots.
